I think that a lot of us have smoked for so many years that it is a real mental adjustment to quit. And because we stay strong during the day, that nicodemon tries to attack us at night when we are more vulnerable.  But you will find that with time, that will stop happening.  The nicodemon will realize that you are not going to cave and he will have no choice but to back off.

Good morning everyone!
 
Day 37 and all is well!  I had a craving in the night when I woke up and I thought "I can have a smoke when I get up" and then quickly remembered that I don't smoke anymore.  It's like my subconscious is taking over while I'm sleeping and letting the cravings in.  On a conscious level I know that I don't smoke anymore, but somewhere in the more primitive part of my brain there's a memory of it and a craving for it.  So I need to not let the primitive part of my brain win!  I may not be on here for a while because I generally use my computer at work and I am going to be on holidays for two weeks.  You may not see a post from me until October 10, but I vow to keep counting the days and keep staying smoke free one day at a time.  October 10 will be day 56 and then before you know it I will be at 2 months!

Good morning everyone!
 
Day 36 and all is well!  I didn't have any cravings yesterday and so far so good today.  I just had a draggy Monday afternoon which was what caused the craving.  I need to look for new tools to deal with those times when I feel draggy so that I don't revert back to the desire to smoke.  I can do stretches, I can drink water, I can pray, I can find something to do as a distraction, I can count my blessings and I can remember all the benefits of not smoking and how bad I would feel if I went back there.  I can't go back.  I have to keep moving forward on this journey.

Good morning everyone,
 
Day 35 and all is well.  After I just finished exclaiming yesterday that my cravings have subsided, I started having cravings again yesterday afternoon.  The only thing I can attribute it to is Monday afternoon blahs.  I felt okay in the morning but started to feel draggy in the afternoon.  Part of what smoking did for me was a "pick me up."  But that feeling of energy after a smoke was very short lived and it was a nervous kind of energy, not a productive kind of energy and as soon as it passed I started thinking about the next "pick me up."  I feel better this morning and no cravings yet today.

I am happy to hear that things are going so well for you!
 
It really is freeing not to smoke, eh?  You realize how much time you wasted smoking.  I used to stand outside after work to have a smoke before getting onto the subway.  Now I don't have to do that, and it's great!  And don't you find it's easier to talk to people when you don't have to worry about stinking of smoke?  And not having to deal with constant cravings rocks!  I mean, the list of benefits of quitting goes on and on.
 
Margie55, I think that as times goes on, it's going to hit you more and more how terrific it is to be a non-smoker.  We definitely made the right choice when we decided to quit.

Day 34 and all is well!  I had a good weekend and went to functions where there were smokers and it didn't even bother me.  I didn't even want one.  I'm so relieved to not have to deal with it anymore.  I have more free time, less laundry and more peace of mind.  No more planning and scheming of ways to find "alone" time.  No more worrying about whether anybody can smell it on me or not.  No more waves of anxiety through my body as I crave my next fix.  It's such a powerful addiction and it's an addiction I don't need in my life anymore.

Good afternoon everyone!
 
Day 30 and all is well!  I continue to feel better and better and the cravings have essentially subsided.  I think of it sometimes but the thought passes and it's not really a craving anymore just kind of an acknowledgement that I don't smoke anymore.  The goal now is to STAY quit.  I have quit many times in the past but when I let my guard down and give in to a craving on a bad day thinking that I can have just one and the next thing I know I'm smoking again.  So I need to accept that I can't have just one.

Day 29 and all is well!  I didn't even have a craving this morning!  What a relief!  I'm also finally starting to feel more motivated to start exercising a little bit and eat healthier so that I can lose some weight.  It's so true that when we address one aspect of our lives it leads to other positive changes.  It's progress not perfection.  Until I lose the weight and get into better shape, I'm working on trying to accept myself as I am, belly fat and all.  The smoking was feeding into my self loathing.  I was already feeling so bad about myself that I may as well smoke as a way to try and  escape all the negativity and bury my fears and insecurities.  But then the smoking was making me feel worse so it was a vicious cycle downward into a pit of despair.  Thank you to all of you for helping me get out of the pit!

I love what you said.  This is a journey of me learning to be kind to myself.  I think we can all relate to that.  I have found that the process of quitting smoking has led me to look at other aspects of my life that I might want to change as well.    I realize now that when I smoked, I did not value myself or my life.  Now I am trying to change all of that.  Who knew that the act of quitting smoking would lead to so many other positive changes?

Day 28 and all is well!  I'm continuing to feel better and better all the time.  I'm finding that because I feel better about myself some of my depression symptoms are lifting as well.  The smoking was a form of self-sabotage and caused me to continuously berate myself but it was self-induced.  Why do I feel the need to sabotage myself?  This is a journey of me learning how to be kind to myself.

Congratulations for staying strong and keeping your quit.  That is really hard to do when you are facing triggers, so you should be really proud of yourself.  And look at you.  You're almost at your first month!  Way to go!
 
You know, it's weird, but when I pass someone smoking on the street, it can sometimes be a trigger.  But when I am at my sister's place, and she smokes, I can only take so much of it, and then I feel sick.  I can't wait to get home so I can breathe properly.  I only quit eight months ago, but what a difference it has made.
 
Margie55, you will find that as time goes on, triggers will become less intense or will disappear completely.  And cravings will become fewer and far between.  And every time you resist, it makes it easier to handle in the future. You will become a pro at saying No.  But keep giving yourself a pat on the back for a job well done.  You are strong and courageous, and you are getting the job done!

Day 27 and all is well!  I went to a big party on the weekend with lots of drinking.  I don't drink but when I had to walk past the smokers outside a few times that was a huge trigger for me.  But I didn't smoke.  Then the next day I continued to have cravings.  But I didn't smoke.  Seeing others smoking really triggers me.  But if I remember that they all probably want to quit as well that helps.

By the way, I can relate to wanting to rebel against the world.  Sometimes I would light up for that very reason.  But that was such a stupid thing to do, because the only person who knew I was trying to rebel was me!  So now, the odd time when I feel that way, I do something a bit self-indulgent.  I may pick up some rather expensive ice cream, or I might buy myself a new game to play.  Whatever I choose, it is still true that only I know I am rebelling in some way, but nevertheless, I get some satisfaction out of it!

Day 23 and all is well!  The cravings have pretty much subsided completely now.  This morning I didn't even think about it.  I just got up and had my coffee and did my usual routine and went to work.  My usual routine now doesn't include a cigarette!  I also sat out on the deck after work yesterday and had my diet coke without even thinking about a smoke!  There's another addiction (lol) but I am tackling one thing at a time, diet coke is next when I'm ready!  I chewed my last nicorette gum yesterday and decided not to buy more.  Not that I'm recommending that for others, you see my smoking was very light and off an on. Some days I would have 6, other days none at all and most days only about 3.  My physical nicotine addiction was minimal, it was mainly a psychological addiction.  I needed to have that "f*** it" moment in my day where I was rebelling against the world.   The whole time I was harming myself and I knew it but the addiction was more powerful than my fear of harming myself.  I just don't need cigarettes in my life at all.  They don't help me at all, they just cause grief.  The addiction used to trick me into thinking that I could have just one.  But I can't have just one.  If I have one then the obsession to have another and another sets in.  I'm so relieved that I don't have to deal with that anymore.

Great attitude Margie. And yes this group is great. I tell everyone about it who is quitting, it's an amazing support system and a great distraction which is why I'm online right now. Quit date is in a week and the cutting back is getting harder. Also stopped my 'just woke up' smoke today and it was hard! So glad you posted about how you felt during those times as I'm feeling the same now and it's great support that I read this to remember it gets easier and so much better. The coughing has gotten so much better just from reducing so far! Thanks again for your posts Margie, they're sure helping me as I follow you and I'm sure you're helping so many others!!

Day 22 and all is well!  I am feeling so much better.  I have more energy and I feel more cheerful and also more calm.  I can focus better and think more clearly.  The cravings are lessening dramatically.  This morning I was up for about half an hour before I even though of it.  The first couple of weeks I was really draggy and tired and stressed, but it passed, not suddenly but gradually and now at week three, heading into week four, I am amazed how much better I feel.  And different this time than when I quit back in January.  I did it on my own then without the help of this on-line support group and it's much easier with the support.  Counting the days and monitoring my progress is very helpful.  Days turn into weeks, weeks will turn into months and then months will turn into years and before I know it, quitting smoking will be a distant memory.  This time I am determined to stay quit.  I gave a smoker a ride last night and boy did he ever smell bad.  I don't need that in my life anymore.

I wouldn't worry about using the gum.  We all do what we have to do to stay smoke free.  That is the most important thing.  You are just starting out, and need time to find alternate ways of dealing with stress, etc.  What you get from gum is nothing compared to what is in even one cigarette.   
 
You have made it past the two week mark, Margie55.  Keep taking it one day at a time.  You are doing great!

Congratz on 15 days Margie55.  One of the problems of quitting is stress and as a smoker you always reached for a cigarette and craved the nicotine.  Now you have to train your body not to need it.  When I was using lozenges I would switch them up with life savers when I felt I was ready to decrease my nicotine.

Day 15 and all is well.  I'm still finding the mornings hardest but I'm getting through it.  I definitely chew more nicotine gum when I'm working.  Yesterday I had about 6 pieces and today I'm going to try to reduce that amount because on the weekend I didn't chew any at all.  Obviously I don't really need the nicotine physically, I just think I need it emotionally and stress brings that on.

Today is day 14!  I'm doing well.  I still crave a little bit in the morning.  It's like I forget momentarily that I have quit and then when I remember that I quit the craving passes.  I used to crave and then start thinking about getting a pack and then start justifying why I needed it.  Now I just get the craving and that's where it stops.  I don't progress to thinking about buying a pack anymore.  So that's real progress.  Thank you all for your kind words and support.

I'm having trouble finding something little that I can do daily to reward myself so would love some suggestions if anyone has some? Congrats on 13 days. I used to smoke as a "reward" to myself, too.  But what a joke that was.  You're absolutely right.  Smoking is not a reward.  It just feeds into our addiction and hurts us.  I think it is wonderful that you are honoring your cousin by quitting smoking.  She would be really proud of you for doing this.

Day 14 already!  I haven't posted in a few days.  Things are going well.  I have been having some anxiety at times and vivid dreams.  The cravings are subsiding.  I didn't even chew any nicorette gum over the weekend.  I did have one this morning though.  I still find that work days are harder than weekends.  It's like I used smoking as a way to motivate or reward myself.  But it's not a motivation or a reward.  In fact it's debilitating and destructive to my well-being.
 
I just feel like mentioning that my user name is inspired by my cousin whose name was Margaret and she was born in 1955 and she died in 2010 a few months before her 55th birthday.  She died of COPD and she was a heavy smoker for many years.  She was a very special person to me and after she died her spirit told me to appreciate my good health and live my life to the fullest.  So every time I smoked I thought about that and felt guilty for it.

Congratulations on Day 8 Margie55, keep on going.  Glad to hear that last night was a more restful night, you've found a pleasantly flavoured nicotine gum to use, and that the increase in dosage of medication has been helpful.  Your body is still adjusting to the changes, so quite normal that the cravings are still there, and could be for another few weeks, but will continue to get less frequent and less intense.

Thank you again for the words of encouragement.  It really helps.  Today is day 8.  I have cravings mainly in the morning and after work but they subside.  I went and bought some more nicorette gum (cinnamon, yay! it's the best flavour and the only one I like) because I think that I need one in the morning and late afternoon as a pick me up.  I had a more normal sleep last night, about 7 hours and I feel fairly well rested.  I always get tired in the afternoons, whether I'm smoking or not.  I think part of the reason I want to smoke is for a "pick me up."  Interestingly I am also dealing with depression and anxiety for the past 15 or so years and I am on two medications to treat this.  I recently increased the dosage of my medications and that seems to be helping.  I often wonder if it is possible that I crave the nicotine because of something that is missing in my brain, like maybe dopamine?  I know that I have an addictive personality, that's for sure.

Congrats on being smoke free for 1 week! Glad you are feeling good today. Being tired could be part of withdrawal symptoms and your body is going through a lot of changes. 
It's really good to hear that you slept well last night. Remember to be patient with yourself and get as much rest as you need, listen to your body with regards to the nicotine too...if you feel you need less, try and see how you respond to it.

Thank you everybody for the words of encouragement.  It really helps.  Today is one week and I am feeling good.  Just really tired.  I slept for 11 hours last night!  I chewed one of my nicorette gums this morning so now I have one left only.  I have made it several days in a row without the gum so I know that I don't really need it and I find I do better without any NRT at all because when I have nicotine in my system sometimes I think it makes me crave more.  I felt that I needed one to wake up this morning because after my long sleep I was still a little groggy even after 3 coffees!

You are on Day 7 already?  Wow, that was fast.
 
I know what you mean about work.  It was the same thing for me.  So this is where you have to learn to change your routines.
 
You will find you need more rest for a while.  Trying to conquer an addiction is hard work, and can be more exhausting than we anticipated.  I found that I was waking up a few times a night so never got a really good night's sleep.  So instead, I napped when I could.  It's not the same as sleeping through the night, but it helped me get through the first month or so, until I was able to sleep through the night again. 
 
You are doing great Margie55.  Keep up the good work, and you will feel better and better.

I'm now on day 7 and doing well. I didn't post for the past few days because for some reason my home computer wasn't working right.  So I'm back at work this morning and cravings are a bit worse because somehow I associate work with smoking.  Have a smoke, go to work, have a smoke after work as a reward.  So it's worse on work days than on weekends.  I haven't had any gum since day 3.  I have 3 pieces left in case of emergency, but the cravings on the weekend were so mild I didn't need one.  I'm feeling a lot better already.  More tired than usual but I'm just trying to get lots of rest.  I feel a lot calmer and happier already.

Unfortunately, even though you were a light smoker, you will still get cravings.  But like you have already discovered, they will pass.  They always do.  Thank goodness for gum, eh?  So much better than a nasty cig. 
 
You know, I went to the liquor store after work today.  A man walked by me and stood next to me looking at the shelf.  He was a smoker.  I could smell him coming, and the smell was so strong it almost made me gag.  I can't believe that we could not smell ourselves or each other when we smoked.  Because now, I just can't stand the stench that comes off of smokers.  The smell of smoke itself doesn't really bother me, but the smell coming from smokers does.  Go figure, eh?

Today is day 3 and I am still doing well.  I had a craving first thing this morning when I woke up.  It's like I forget that I don't smoke anymore.  It was a stronger craving than the past 2 days but it passed quickly.  I always remember every time I quit that day 3 is a hard day.  I'm chewing gum a few times a day when I get a craving and that helps.  No patch this time because I was only smoking about 3 or 4 cigarettes a day, depending on how much alone time I had! lol  Last night it was so great being able to kiss my boyfriend without worrying whether he could taste it or not.  I smoked menthols and I brushed my teeth very thoroughly and used mouth wash and I'm pretty sure he never noticed, but I'm probably wrong.  Anyway, it's so nice to be able to kiss him and not have those thoughts going through my head.

You know, you are going to find it is such a relief to let go of all the guilt and embarrassment associated with smoking.  I remember being so ashamed that I was almost paralyzed at times.  And I would brood about it constantly.  Now, all of those negative feelings are gone, and I am acutely aware of how liberating it is to quit smoking. 
 
You are going to face some challenges.  When you do, go through the milestones, drink lots of cold water, remember why you wanted to quit, and distract yourself.  And keep posting.  We all need each other to get through this. And we can all succeed.

Good morning,
 
Today is day 2 and I am still doing well.  I still feel relief.  I have realized that I thought smoking was giving me something to look forward to.  I would think to myself while at work "just get through the day and you can sneak a smoke after work."  Does a few seconds of relief followed by hours of anguish and guilt sound like something to look forward to?  This addiction is so powerful and it is complete nonsense.  I have so much going on in my life that is good right now and I don't need to sabotage it with destructive addictive behaviour.

Good morning everyone,
 
I feel so relieved this morning.  No smoking today and I did have some short-lived cravings but they passed quickly.  I felt so good this morning arriving at work and not having to worry about whether anybody could smell it on me and whether or not I had remembered to not leave my lighter out on the kitchen counter by mistake.  I had been telling myself "it's no big deal, so you sneak a smoke a few time a day, that's not a problem."  That was my addiction talking to me a tricking me.  It was and is a big deal.   What I needed to hear was "that's no way to live" but in a way that is understanding and not judgmental.  Thank you so much.

Hi Margie55,

Reading this, I get a glimpse of just how happy you will be in short order, being able to be true to yourself, as well as to others. It is definitely exhausting when you have to hide your smoking or any other addiction every day. 

You've done it for 6 months so you know you can do it again. We look forward to reading about your progress, and we'll certainly be here to help you face the challenges that arise.

That's terrible.  That's no way to live.  And it just goes to show how powerful this addiction is.  I can relate to what you are saying, because I continued to smoke even though I was ashamed of myself for doing it.  Every day I was so embarrassed.  And I never went anywhere without breath strips, not that I was fooling anyone.
 
Maybe this time when you start your quit again, try posting here every day.  Personally, I found that posting here helped to keep me accountable.  That is, I didn't want to let myself down and I didn't want to let my friends here down.  And that was a really powerful motivator for me.
 
I hope you can find your inner strength to help you keep your quit.  It is so worth it.

I have quit many times and sometimes for extended periods of time up to as long as 6 months but i started again a few months ago.  Nobody knows that I smoke.  I sneak it when nobody is around.  I brush my teeth and change my clothes and I go to great lengths to hide it.  It's exhausting.  I'm constantly worrying if people know.  I'm driving myself crazy and I have to stop again. I have already smoked today, so I picked tomorrow as my quit date.
