Hey Vinnie,

Its great you are preparing to quit...

leaving a table immediately after the meal is finished is good too...     and go brush your teeth,,,

When I quit, I was informed food particles in the mouth are a trigger to smoke,  and a fresh mouth is the opposite..

delay times can be increased as the week goes on and you'll see, by increments,   you gain a little each time..

  Something else we did...

we changed brands..... to a brand with less nicotine   ..by checking the package..  some are 1'1 gms some are .8   etc...

By decreasing the nicotine slowly that way and also the increased delay times, betwwen cigarettes,
your body is gradually being cleasned without a cold turkey  jolt....

 Just a suggestion,

Everyone here is rooting for you!

 Go for it!

Hi Vinnie, welcome to the SHO community.

Regarding tips for cutting down. Here are a couple you might want to try:

1. Keep a record of the exact number of cigarettes you smoke each day. Start this record before you start tapering.
2. The easiest way to reduce is by not smoking all the cigarettes that you think you need to smoke, that you smoke out of habit. Before each cigarette ask yourself, "Do I really need to smoke this one?"
3. Delay having your first cigarette after you wake up. If you usually smoke within 15 minutes of getting out of bed, try waiting at least 30 minutes. Gradually lengthen the time you delay by working on a new routine.

The new routines and habits you create while cutting down will make quitting a lot easier.

Please keep in touch.

Sincerely,
Paul

Welcome Vinnie!

I have been successful so far and I cut down first.  I smoked a pack a day for 17 years.  I cut down over the period of eight days then quit cold turkey on the 9th day.  I do have to tell you though that because the withdrawal was so intense during the week I was cutting down, the week I didn't smoke at all was a lot easier in comparison.

Here was my schedule if it helps.
Day 1 = 12 cigarettes spread out evenly throughout the day.  Kept my first morning smoke upon waking.
Day 2 = 9 cigarettes = one every 2 hours, and kept my morning smoke upon waking.
Day 3 = 8 cigarettes - WAITED 1 HOUR before having my morning smoke...thought I would DIE! haha
Day 4 = 8 cigarettes - same as day 3 - I knew I wasn'tstrong enough to reduce further and didn't want to push too far and ruin everything.
Day 5 = same as day 3 - BUT noticed that when the scheduled time to smoke would roll around I had forgotten by a few minutes..knew I was ready to cut back some more so,
Day 6 = 5 cigarettes - every 3 hours during the day and WAITED 2 HOURS before having my first morning smoke
Day 7 = 4 cigarettes - every 4 hours - WAITED 3 HOURS for morning smoke
Day 8 - 3 cigarettes - 5 hours apart - WAITED 4 HOURS FOR morning smoke
Day 9= QUIT DAY!

Keep in mind that if a time isn't listed on the schedule then you CANNOT smoke, period.  This will also test you and show yourself how ready you are to actually quit.  I had 6 cartons in my freezer while I was writing on my schedule attached to the fridge, and was still able to stick to my schedule...that is how I knew I could do it.  There is still 5 cartons in my basement freezer as we speak, and I couldn't care less.  Also I purposely DIDN'T smoke during times when I normally would have.  For instance after eating, NOT allowed.  So that served to break the habit portion of it as well by trying to reprogram what I did instead during those times.

I hope this was helpful!

Best of luck on your quit!

When I had originally set my quit date, I cut back from 15 to 5 a day.  (There are others on here who cut back from a pack a day!!)  Set your times you will allow yourself to smoke and stick to it.  A previous post suggested to only carry your alotted amount of cigs per day.
Keep busy and do other things that you enjoy when you are skipping one of your daily smokes.  Gum, water, candy really help to take the urge away.
Many good resources and people with some terrific advice on this site!
Keep visiting and post your progress regularly!!

Hope to see lots more of you!

Congrats on your quit date!!!!  You CAN do this!!
