Hey Ican2 , when I quit for 17 years , one of the big steps I took was just surrounding myself with non-smokers and put aside any alcohol. I would go to the show , bowling etc. where of coarse there was no smoking. I keep in touch with my smoking friends via phone calls etc. After a few months I found I was stronge enough to be around smokers as long as there was no alcohol involved. It was kind of neat walking into a smokers house after quitting and smelling the stench. Don't beat yourself up about the slip as long as you didn't break your will.

Hey I can....I experienced that super duper fatigue in the very beginning as well. All I wanted to do was sleep. Now that I am into week 3, let me tell you how polar opposite I feel. It's annoying how much energy I have lol so the fatigue will definitely ease the more your body heals n the further into your quit you travel. My new challenge is finding a balance between the 2 lol....I have had insomnia, horrible nightmares and intense hot flashes however I did use champix to quit....my symptoms are still with me 21 days in but last much less time..ps congrats on crushing hell week and tmrw you've conguered heck week!!!!! Hey Ican
Way to go with maintaining your quit.It is great to hear you didn't let that slip discourage you from your journey.
I get what you say about the fatigue, I sure am tired and blah since I quit. I have always worked out regularly and continue to do so, but instead of my typical of tons of energy, I'm just kind of slow and I sleep way more. I figure that at least its better than insomnia! I realize that nicotine was a stimulant and that I was probably jacked up on that and coffee most of the day just to get through. Am thinking my body needs some time to reset itself (no coffee for me as that just goes so much with smoking, I can't go there right now). I tell myself that quitting smoking is a huge deal physically so of course things are going to be out of whack for a while. Just trying to go with it.
Sleepy non smoker...that would be me for now.
cheers !
take care!

Hi Everyone Well I've managed to stay totally smoke free from my 3 cig slip last weekend. I sure hope I can keep this up. Just wondering though - it may be all in my head but I've noticed that my hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia have gotten much worse since I've given up the nicotine. I have fatigue - big time, even though I have been going to Kettlebell Bootcamp twice a week and trying to get out for walks. I spent all day yesterday on the couch. Had zero energy. Is that part of the withdrawal since I'm not using any nic replacement??

Hi everyone. Thank you for your words of advice and encouragement. I am happy to report that I have not caved since my slip Saturday evening and have managed to stay smoke free since then. My physical cravings have not been as bad as week one and I'm finding that I am not "thinking" about smoking as much either. I know I don't want to take any chances of another slip so plan on abstaining from drinking any alcohol for awhile and am trying to spend time doing other things to fill my time, like reading a good book. I might even try knitting something. I think the fact that is has gotten much colder outside is helping as well. I sure won't miss standing outside in the cold .... rain ...... snow for a smoke, and I hope that I can get myself to the place where I won't miss having a smoke at all. Cheers to all

Arrrgh alcohol lol it caused a slippery slope for me too-I slipped twice before admitting to myself the drinks had to go for the next while as my ties between smoking n drinking led to too much temptation. Like everyone has highlighted, don't be too hard on yourself. This is a journey of ups n downs. It's also a learning experience:discovering what your triggers are, what really helps in moments of weakness, etc. Brush yourself off, remind yourself why its important to you to quit n continue on :)

Hi Ican2
Don't be too hard on yourself, and keep going no matter what. I was reading your post about how the slip happend and thinking that would totally happen to me too in the same circumstances. Having alcohol and good times with freinds and access to cigs via a neighbour were often my downfall in the past too. I know I have to initially avoid those things and then come up with a better plan for myself. I've got a lovley group of freinds and we get together for potluck dinners and there is much talk and wine and smoking. And as much as I love those chilled out evenings, I know I could not get through it without smoking, so I'm just avoiding it all together until I figure it out. Its helping me to learn from the more seasoned quitters that eventually you can be around other smokers and alcohol and not be tempted. But for now, for me, I have to be a hermit for a while. Or make some new non smoking freinds!
cheers and don't give up, looking forward to hearing how things are going with you!

Hi. You are doing great. It really does get easier. Like you I attempted to quit several times. Last Oct I attended a family wedding in another province and learned that several (12) of my relatives there had stopped smoking reading Allen Carr's book "Easy Way To Stop Smoking". The minute I returned to my room that evening I ordered the book on Amazon. I really thought no one can stop smoking by reading a book. I received the book mid Nov due to a shipping error. I started reading the book on Dec 6, 2012 and before I got half way through the book I stopped. My official quit day is Dec 9, 2012. Like the book says it is actually easy to stop. What the book does is simply remove the brainwashing and helps the reader understand nicotine addiction. I have recommeded the book to several other and everyone of them has also stopped. It is worth the $6.00 I paid for the book. Good luck.

Ican2 believe that you can and you will, not a bad plan to let the ones close to you know and refuse to give you smokes when you ask, many have had to stay away from drinking in the start of their quit, but not to worry as you get stronger you will be able to return to all you did before ... Don't be hard on yourself you still had a week smoke free under your belt , and that's at least a pack or more you didn't smoke All the best to you, You Can Do It To !!!! Mia

Hi Ican2, a slip is a slip, all you can do is move on and get right back on your quit. Now you've learned more about what your limits are and what you have to avoid in the future to keep your quit. Make sure your neighbors know you have quit and ask for their support. Perhaps they could have a smoke before they come over to visit and leave their smokes at home or in the car ? I still feel any friend worth keeping will be supportive and do whatever they can to help and not flaunt it in your face especially when at your home, but in all fairness to them, I guess you did ask for the smoke , so they have to know what you need, especially in the early days and weeks. What I've done in the past when a friend or co-worker has told me they quit smoking I make an agreement with them in advance that if they ever ask me for one I will tell them to ask again in 15 minutes and if they still want one I'll give them one then. I also have avoided alcohol like the plague LOL...that would certainly be a trigger for me and I'm on Champix anyways and wouldn't want to drink while on medication to begin with. So, here you are and back on your quit Good to see you

Hi Violet56, Yay me, Vincenza Thanks for checking in with me. Had a really busy day yesterday preparing an early Thanksgiving dinner for friends in from out of town. Was a lovely day and visit. After everyone left I lit a fire in the chimnea and sat outside with my glass of wine (probably glass #3). Big, big mistake. My neighbor pulled in the driveway and strolled over to say hi. I caved and bummed a smoke and then a second. Feeling really disappointed in myself this morning. Also feeling physically "hungover". Looks like I"m going to have to avoid wine with dinner guests for awhile and make a deal with my neighbor and my other smoking friends to flat out refuse me if I should ever ask for a cigarette. The way I'm feeling this morning however, I certainly won't be craving one today. Hope you enjoy your day.

Welcome I can 2!! Happy thanksgiving soon too! How did the walk go? Keeping busy (ie surfing the net) is an awsum way to crush a craving-keeping yourself busy does help during those moments. Walking. Ice cold water. Deep breaths. Word finds. Reading here n posting...the more you explore info and learn bout the enemy, the better equipped you are and will find what helps you most on your journey. I also recommend reading Allen Carr's easy way to stop smoking....95%+ success rate, 100 pages, free online-nuthin to lose. Keep up the great work :)
